Los Angeles - During the Lakers' first training on Tuesday, their focus was on focusing on the daily training required to pursue excellence.
By Wednesday, the focus became to win in the present. In this regard, the players at the end of the lineup on the Lakers' training camp roster all stood up and performed well.
In the matchup, the Lakers divided the players into Purple and Grey. The Purple Team is usually composed of main players. Redick said that the Grays had been dominant in the early days of training camp against the Purple.
"I think they won every confrontation today," Redick said after training. "From one-on-one shooting training, to five-on-five matches, to our transition offensive drills, they won everything. I also told the players who signed Exhibit-10 contracts and two-way contracts that they are making our training camp better now." It's encouraging to hear that all three of the two-way contract players were doing well in training camp. Nick Smith Jr. signed before training camp, while Christian Koroke and Chris Mannon joined in a two-way contract in the summer.
has famous players like Luca Doncic and new stars like Korlock, this talent combination has formed a good chemistry that they can work together to stay competitive.
"I think that's what we're here, to spur them and make them better," Korlock said. "It also makes us better ourselves. So, playing hard, trying to make them better, I think it helps both of us." This competitive spirit from two-way contract players (who will allocate time between the NBA and the G League) and Exhibit-10 contract players (who will likely sign with the South Bay Lakers after training camp) is an example of what Redick called the "integration model" last summer.
These players are experiencing the feeling of attending the Lakers training camp. For those players who end up signing a two-way contract or heading to the South Bay Lakers, they will continue to develop these habits within the Lakers system.
Everyone is working hard for the same goal, everyone is forging each other and making progress together.
Jared Vanderbilt returns strongly
As the Lakers welcome many core players back, they have the opportunity to continue their efforts on the good foundation they laid last year and take it to the next level.
Jared Vanderbilt is one of the players back, and it was his first healthy summer in a while, he quickly got into the form in training camp.
Redick mentioned Vanderbilt's health as a positive factor, and even discussed how Marcus Smart and Vanderbilt put pressure on the ball holder early in the defensive round.
"I think with a healthy Vanderbilt and hopefully a healthy Marcus Smart, our ability to put more pressure on the ball holder early in the defensive round will become a reality," Redick said. "Vanderbilt's current movement is a world of difference, even when we ended the season. His growth and physical improvement this summer are obvious in the first two days of training camp." The Lakers signed Smart in the hope that he would be a defensive gate, but he has not been fully involved in training camp. Hopefully, when he returns, he can seamlessly connect with this lineup. Vanderbilt, on the other hand, has been involved in training and looks as good as ever.
"It looks like we did welcome the Vanderbilt back before the injury," Redick said. "I talked to him a lot this summer, and after being traded to the Lakers, he was in a tough situation because he had to play the fifth and there was no other choice. We had limited options at the time, either playing a small roster or having him as the substitute fifth. So, I think getting him back to the outside, his athleticism and agility showed that he was in good shape, which would be very helpful for us."
For the past two years, Vanderbilt has been suffering from injuries. He only played 36 games last season, and only played 29 games the previous season.
When healthy, Vanderbilt showed top defense and successfully limited some of the top NBA players.
Healthy version of Vanderbilt is a key member of the Lakers' 2022-23 season, which reached the Western Conference Finals that season. If Redick had that player from the beginning of the season, he would improve the team's defensiveness and ceiling.
Injury Update
Gab Vincent is the only Lakers player who missed training on Tuesday but resumed training on Wednesday. Smart, Adu Tiero and LeBron James are still recovering.
Another person has been added to the Lakers' injury report. Maxi Claiber suffered a minor injury to the quadriceps femoris on Tuesday and will undergo an MRI test on Wednesday afternoon. Redick said he hopes the injury is not serious.
