Mavericks and the Knicks were considered potential next players this summer. As a traditional strong team in the big market, the Mavericks have James' friends such as Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis and Jason Kidd.

However, most agents and executives believe that the Cavaliers are the only team that James will seriously consider joining, besides the Lakers.

"If he wanted to go on a farewell tour like Kobe, the Cavaliers were the only meaningful option," said a league executive. "LeBron cared about his story and did not want to be Michael Jordan in the Wizards." The problem is that his contract is too big to be traded to the Cavaliers without sacrificing key players such as Dalius Garland and Jarrett Allen.

"This will never happen," said another executive. The only way to join is to buy out his contract before this season. But since the Cavaliers have exceeded the second-level salary cap, they cannot sign players whose previous salary exceeds the full middle class special case after the 2025-26 season begins.

"The Knights will obviously welcome this opportunity," said the third executive. But will LeBron accept it? There are different opinions within the league.

"I don't think he would mind," said one agent. "He knew playing in the East with the Cavaliers would make them a big hit in the Finals."

But most insiders are skeptical. “When you accept the buyout, it shows that people in the league don’t want you anymore,” another agent said, “I don’t think LeBron would want that.”
